Which Chinese cities have the most top-ranked universities?

The geographical distribution is another interesting feature of the list. Beijing has the highest number of universities represented, with 8 institutions. Shanghai follows with 5, while Guangzhou has 3.

Several other cities have two universities each: Nanjing, Wuhan, Tianjin, Xi'an, Chengdu, Shenzhen and Changsha.

The remaining cities represented by one university each are Hangzhou, Hefei, Harbin, Xiamen, Jinan, Dalian, Chongqing and Changchun.

This information can help students begin thinking about where they would prefer to study. A university's location may influence everyday life, accommodation arrangements and the overall experience of studying in China. It is therefore worth considering the city alongside the institution itself.

How should you choose a Chinese university?

An international ranking is a useful starting point, but it should not be the only factor in your decision. The most highly ranked university is not automatically the best choice for every student.

Before selecting an institution, consider the following:

  • Your intended degree: Check whether the university offers your preferred programme at the language, bachelor's, master's or PhD level.
  • Language of instruction: Determine whether the programme is taught in Chinese or English and what language qualifications are required.
  • Admission requirements: Review the academic qualifications and other documents required for your chosen programme.
  • Scholarship opportunities: Check whether the university offers scholarships for your programme and whether you meet the relevant eligibility requirements.
  • Location: Consider which Chinese city would be suitable for your studies and living arrangements.

A university's global position and its admission requirements are two different things. Being included in the QS Top 500 does not guarantee admission or a scholarship. Each university and programme has its own application requirements.
